StarV3 Differences

This article covers the differences between StarOS v2 and StarV3. This is especially useful for people who are upgrading from StarOS v2 to StarV3.

StarV3 Additional Features Compared to StarOS v2

• 2x/4x cloaking modes, providing 2x/4x more range than the standard 36.29 miles (58.4 kilometers) and some resistance to interference due to narrow 10MHz/5MHz wide channels as compared to the 802.11 standard 20MHz wide channels
• OLSR dynamic routing
• Policy-based routing
• 802.11h DFS and TPC support necessary for some countries, especially european ETSI countries
• 802.11e WMM/WME QoS (1.2.0 beta series only)
• Managed mode - communication between StarV3 AP and client software, giving much more resistance to noise interference. Sync button for instantaneous channel/cloaking change without loosing single packet.
• Quality is now calculated as % concerning number of errors and retried packets.
• "Enhanced ANI" option for clients, giving more resistance to high noise.

StarV3 Missing Features Compared to StarOS v2

• Proxy-arp type bridging for client-side station. You must NAT or route a /30 or use VDS. Do not use WDS bridged clients on a Point-to-Multipoint AP.
• No StarV3 Server Edition comparable to the StarOS v2 Server Edition
• Caching proxy server, squid (from StarOS v2 Server Edition)
• RADIUS server (from StarOS v2 Server Edition)
• RADIUS ACL support exists from 1.3.0
• BGP dynamic routing
• Starutil -dscr/-uscr commands are supported in StarV3 1.3.x series)
• Starutil -da/-ai/-ci commands not supported
• IP accounting
• SNMP support is basic and supports full wireless interface stats from StarV3 1.3.x series
• PPTP client
• PCMCIA and Agere/Hermes wireless support
• Prism 2/2.5 wireless support (should be included in StarV3 - unconfirmed)
• WPA/WPA2 exists from StarV3 1.3.x series)
